Young women's leadership
Our Vision at the YWCA of Aotearoa New Zealand is of a fully inclusive world where justice, peace, health, human dignity, freedom and care for the environment are promoted and sustained through women's leadership
We believe this goal is only attainable through proactive initiatives, which is why we make a commitment to young women's leadership through training, support, 'Y' Programmes such as our Y-Dub Clubs and Future Leaders programmes, scholarships and much more.
Outward Bound Subsidy Scholarships
The YWCA of Aotearoa New Zealand provides subsidies of up to $1,500 (including GST) towards course fees for young women who wish to attend an Outward Bound course.
Applications must be made through, and supported by a Member Association. If you do not live near a local YWCA, you may forward your application directly through the YWCA of Aotearoa new Zealand.
There are certain commitment requirements that need to be met in order to be eligible for the scholarships so be sure to discuss these with your supporting YWCA. To download an application form click here, and for further information contact your local YWCA.

Y-Dub Clubs
- The YWCA of Hamilton's Y-Dub Club is a Leadership Programme intended for young women who with the right guidance and encouragement can become great leaders!
- The Y-Dub Club at the YWCA of Whangarei is an informal group for young women in secondary school. Once a week a Youth Co-ordinator visits young women at various high schools during their lunch hour to discuss youth issues and plan activities amongst other things.
Future Leaders
Future Leaders is a free programme that works with young women aged 14-18 years. Since it began in 2002, Future Leaders has mentored over 225 young women from 16 schools. These students represent over 20 ethnicities.
To develop leadership skills we provide workshops, activities, camps and leadership opportunities, all designed to support key developmental stages.
Each student is matched with a mentor who supports and encourages her. All participants are regularly assessed and both students and mentors are supported by Future Leaders Programme staff. For more information click here to go to the YWCA of Auckland website.
Discover
The Discover™ programme helps build confident young women who have the skills to realise their own potential, as well as inspiring and influencing others around them. Discover™ works with young women in Years 11-13 over either a 12 or 18 month period.
Participating high schools have the chance to choose how long they wish the programme to run and also can influence which students should participate.
During the programme, the young women complete a series of workshops which may include:
- Introduction to Leadership
- Personal and Cultural Identity
- Goal Setting
- Communications and Public Speaking
- Global Awareness
- Life Skills

Member Association Scholarships
The YWCA of Hamilton's Young Women's Tertiary Education scholarship is for New Zealand resident young women aged between 16 and 30 years as at 1 January who are participating in tertiary study in the Hamilton area. The scholarship award is $2,500, payable in five equal instalments during the academic year.
Scholarship recipients need to be:
- Confident
- Have excellent time management skills
- A general "all rounder" with a wide range of skills and experiences.
The recipient is expected to fill a role of working member of the Hamilton YWCA Board. She must be a good representative of the YWCA's philosophy and relate well to young women. Applications open on 1 August and close on 30 September each year.
